Guy has recently been appointed to the Eastland Helicopter Rescue Trust and, as a chartered accountant, also lends his skills to the role of treasurer.
And while he lives in Auckland – where he is an associate director with Johnston Associates Chartered Accountants Ltd (JACAL) – it is not a role he’ll be carrying out at arm’s length.
“I’m also responsible for running JACAL’s Gisborne office so I get to come home once a month . . . if not more,” he says.
“That means I’m also able to get involved with the work of this trust that means so much to the Tairāwhiti community.”
From a long-established farming family, Guy graduated from the University of Otago with a BCom in 2015 and, after working to qualify as a chartered accountant, started with JACAL three years later.
By early 2020 he was a week away from heading to London to start work in a commercial property firm when the borders slammed shut. So he instead headed home to ride out the two-month lockdown in familiar territory where, having rejoined JACAL, he worked remotely.
And he says he certainly does not regret that travel setback: as well as building his career in the following years, he and fiancé Amelia welcomed a baby girl.
Guy has carried out volunteer work before – notably for an Auckland ocean regeneration project – but says he’s stoked his first formal governance role is back in his home town.
“I love Gisborne and because I come from a rural background, my family and their friends have been longtime supporters of the Trust Tairāwhiti Eastland Rescue Helicopter,” he says.
“Most of us know someone who has had to be uplifted in a time of critical need, so it’s an important service and one I am thrilled to be able to give back to.”
